Turing's solution involved proposing a hypothetical programmable computing machine. In spring 1936, Newman was presented by Turing with a draft of "On Computable Numbers with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem". He realised the paper's importance and helped ensure swift publication.

Newman was so impressed by Turing's work that he took him under his wing, helped him publish his work and arranged for him to spend time at Princeton, with which Newman had links. Newman remained at Cambridge during the early years of World War II, until he joined the war effort in codebreaking at Bletchley Park in 1942.
