A childhood bicycle mishap resulted in her noticing a mailbox of a man named Macy Gray; she used the name in stories she wrote and later decided to use it as her stage name.

Nathon Mclntyre, Macy Gray’s brother and Bodyrock gym owner, appeared on the fifth season of Queer Eye in place of Macy Gray’s brother, who established the organization nearly 14 years earlier. In episode 10, he is the hero. He also revealed that he sings and that his stage name is Killer Whale.
