Purcell was lead actor, writer, director and co-producer of a film adaptation, also titled The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson, premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2021, released on Australian screens on 5 May 2022, after a two-year delay owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
