Actor Jude Law (who portrays Zaitsev) uses an accurate version of the weapon in the film: a 7.62×54mmR Mosin Model 1891/30 sniper rifle with a PU 3.5× sniper scope. As a film inspired by real events, it was dramatized and the plot was fictional in several ways.

In the heat of battle, he kills five Germans, and is noticed by Danilov ( Joseph Fiennes ), the political officer assigned to his unit.
