When he was still a UT student, Williams started importing Peruvian handknit sweaters as a way to make some money while he tried to finish his thesis. He didn't have much of a fashion sense, as it turned out, and he changed his focus to folk art, particularly Peruvian weavings.

Jonathan Williams' store resembles a well-indulged youngster's heaping toy chest. The folk art he's crammed into his shelves and display cases at Tesoros Trading Company is hallucinatory: everything from beer-can reliquaries made in Mexico to sequined Haitian voodoo flags, Nepalese whirligig caps, complete tiny Brazilian marching bands and a fetching array of Virgin of Guadalupe mousepads.
Peru is no exception to this notion and is rife with many artisan markets, bursting with colors, sounds, smells and many large as life characters offering an insight into the local vibe. The tradition of weaving stretches back over 5,000 years in Peru, and there is a long tradition in producing traditional handicrafts – in other words Peru has a LOT of markets.
