Antes de su estreno en Broadway y el West End, Jesus Christ Superstar fue grabado en forma de álbum conceptual con Ian Gillan (vocalista de Deep Purple) como Jesús, Murray Head como Judas e Yvonne Elliman como María Magdalena.

La obra fue creada como opera rock y por ello se contó para su ejecución con algunos de los interpretes del género del momento ( Ian Gillan, Murraid Head, etc) y con la Grease Band, que acompañó a Joe Cocker en Woodstock ( Henry McCullough (guitarra), Neil Hubbard (teclados), Alan Spenner (bajo) y Bruce Rowland (batería)).
Se han realizado muchas versiones de la obra pero esta es la original grabada en 1.970 y teniendo como protagonistas a : Ian Gillan (Jesus), Murray Head (Judas) e Yvonne Eliman ( María Magdalena). En los temas en los que interviene Gillan es totalmente reconocible con su típica forma de cantar y con los gritos que le hicieron famoso con los Purple.
