Biografia. Jake Gyllenhaal è nato in una famiglia inserita nell'ambiente cinematografico hollywoodiano: suo padre, Stephen Gyllenhaal, è un regista di origine svedese, mentre sua madre, Naomi Foner, è una sceneggiatrice che proviene da una famiglia di religione ebraica di New York; anche la sorella maggiore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, è un'attrice e ha recitato al suo fianco nel film Donnie Darko.
Donnie Darko, in which Gyllenhaal played his second lead role on film, was not a box office success on its initial 2001 release; eventually, the film became a cult favorite. Directed by Richard Kelly , the film is set in 1988 and stars Gyllenhaal as a troubled teenager who experiences visions of a 6-foot (1.8 m) tall rabbit named Frank who tells him that the world is coming to an end.
