J.J. Cale, the enigmatic musician who wrote and performed hits such as “Cocaine” and “After Midnight,” was a master of blending blues, rock, and country elements to create a unique sound. His music paved the way for later artists such as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Neil Young, and his influence is felt even today.

But he’s best known for a couple of tracks that Eric Clapton had hits with in the ’70s, “After Midnight” and “Cocaine”. I’ve been lucky enough to have interviewed Cale a couple of times, the last time being back on March 31, 2009, a week or so before he played a sold-out show at North Van’s Capilano Performing Arts Theatre.
Cale recorded Cocaine on his fourth album, Troubadour, released in 1976. When Clapton was looking for songs for his Slowhand album, he once again looked to Cale, and chose Cocaine, which became the first song on the set.
