Diane Joan Schuur was born in Tacoma, Washington, two months premature and weighing less than three pounds. ... In 2000, she was awarded the Helen Keller Achievement Award by the American Foundation for the Blind. In a 2011 interview, Schuur stated that she had chronically struggled with her weight.
Schuur, 16, was still attending Washington State School for the Blind and performing original material. Her unique voice and playful personality wowed audiences while she was still in school. In 1975, Schuur made her Monterey Jazz Festival debut. After seeing her perform at the Festival, Stan Getz became a huge fan and mentor. The rest is history.
