In speaking, we often use if-clauses without main clauses, especially when asking people politely to do things. If is usually followed by will, would, can or could when it is used to be polite: [Shop assistant to customer]
For example: If it rains, we will cancel the trip. If it rains …. is the if-clause (the condition) An if-clause begins with IF and has a subject and a verb. We will cancel the trip …. is the main clause (the result) If introduces a condition. This is something that may or may not happen, depending on the circumstances.

Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences.
The main clause usually contains a modal verb such as will or would. Example: If I have time later, I will help you with the presentation. I’m sorry, if I had time, I would help you. Technically, there are four types of if-clauses in English grammar: zero, first, second and third.
