Abercrombie began his theatrical career during World War II. He moved to the United States at age 17 and made his American stage debut in 1955 in a production of "Stalag 17" with Jason Robards. He continued to work on and off Broadway until in 1957, when he was drafted into the US Army and stationed in Germany as part of Special Services, working mainly in the entertainment sector.
