His fourth wife Deborah Hawkins, aged 46 at the time of Axton ’ s death, told People magazine that her husband was happiest making music and never gave up hope of walking again. Years of drug use and compulsive overeating had also taken a toll on Axton ’ s health, and he eventually sought help through a drug rehabilitation program in 1991.
