23 de ago. de 2022 · Scamwatch is urging the public to be wary of phone messages from a family member or friend claiming they need help, following a significant rise in “Hi Mum” scams in recent months. More than 1,150 Australians fell victim to the so-called “Hi Mum” scam in the first seven months of this year, with total reported losses of $2.6 million.
The Hi Mum/Dad scam is a fraudulent message sent via a messaging app or social media platforms such as Messenger, WhatsApp or Snapchat. The sender claims to be a distressed family member, pretending they have a new number because their phone was lost, broken or stolen.
Police have arrested a man who allegedly obtained a "substantial amount of money" via the ‘Hi Mum’ scam. The scam involves perpetrators sending messages to victims, claiming to be loved ones in need of money. Over 11, 000 incidents were reported in Australia in 2022, amounting to losses of over $7.2 million.
