Shire is the only daughter of Italia (née Pennino) and arranger/composer Carmine Coppola. She is the sister of director and producer Francis Ford Coppola, and of the academic August Coppola, the aunt of actor Nicolas Cage, and of director Sofia Coppola, and the niece of composer and conductor Anton Coppola.

Four years after the first Godfather, Shire joined another classic movie franchise as Adrian Balboa in Rocky (1976).
Talia, as Francis' sister, played Michael's sister. Her mother Italia Coppola played Michael's mother - although only at the character's funeral. Her niece, and Francis' daughter, Sofia Coppola , played Michael's daughter and Connie Corleone's niece.
