Synopsis. ACT I. The movie begins on a rainy night in a Chinese restaurant somewhere in southern Brooklyn, New York City with Sheldon 'Shelley' Levene (Jack Lemmon), a veteran real estate salesman, in a phone booth attempting to contact a doctor for news about his daughter, who is in a hospital with a chronic illness.
