Ferdinand Verbiest (en chino tradicional, 南懷仁; pinyin, Nan Huairen) (Pittem, Flandes, 9 de octubre de 1623 - Pekín, China, 28 de enero de 1688) fue un célebre misionero jesuita flamenco en China, durante la dinastía Qing e inventor del primer vehículo a vapor del que se tiene constancia.
Ferdinand Verbiest, SJ (9 October 1623 – 28 January 1688) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China during the Qing dynasty. He was born in Pittem near Tielt in the County of Flanders (now part of Belgium). He is known as Nan Huairen (南 懷 仁) in Chinese.

Ferdinand Verbiest was a Flemish missionary to China in the 17th century. He produced the first Manchu edition of the first six books of Euclid, a remarkable world map, and a steam automobile. He is also famed as an astronomer, designing astronomical instruments and producing calendars.
El 9 de octubre de 1623 nacía en la localidad de Pittem (actual Bélgica) Ferdinand Verbiest. De sus primeros años apenas se sabe que estudió en Brujas, Cortrique y Lovaina, humanidades, filosofía y matemáticas.

Misionero, astrónomo y cartógrafo. Nacido en la pequeña ciudad flamenca de Pitthem, llegó a Pekín en 1660, tomó el cargo de subdirector del observatorio bajo la dirección de Johann Schall von Bell y se convirtió en su más fiel colaborador.
