The feeler gauge method measures the internal clearance reduc-tion by passing the gauge between the rollers and the raceway. With this method, you do not adjust the internal clearance as some believe. You adjust the correct ring expansion to have the correct tight fit. Using a feeler gauge isn’t accurate. It depends on experience and feeling.
This SKF feeler gauge is used to measure radial internal clearances when adjusting spherical roller bearings. These are often found in gearboxes and turbines. The gauge has 29 blades, each of a different thickness. The thinnest is just 0.05 mm, with the others increasing incrementally to 1 mm.
