Eric Roth ist der Sohn des Filmproduzenten und Universitätsprofessors Leon Roth und dessen Frau Miriam, die beim Radio arbeitete. Er wuchs in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York auf. Roths jüdische Herkunft schlug sich auch in seinen Werken nieder. Sein Debüt als Drehbuchautor gab er 1970 mit dem Film To Catch a Pebble.

Eric Roth (born 22 March 1945) is an American screenwriter. He won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Forrest Gump (1994). He also co-wrote the screenplay for Michael Mann's The Insider (1999), the Steven Spielberg film Munich (2005), David Fincher's film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) , all of which were nominated for Oscars.
