3 de nov. de 2023 · The epicardium is the outermost layer of the heart. It is actually the visceral layer of the serous pericardium, which adheres to the myocardium of the heart. Histologically, it is made of mesothelial cells, the same as the parietal pericardium.

EPDCs (Epicardium-derived progenitor cells) emerge from the fetal epicardium through the process of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and contribute to various cardiac lineages, such as cardiac fibroblasts (CFs), smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and pericytes (PCs).
