It has a lot of tense suspense and all the actors are doing great jobs. Bogart is great as a war veteran, and his relationship with Bacall's character is nicely understated and subtle (it is implied they're starting to care for each other, but not really shown in any overtly romantic way). Robinson's gangster character is perfectly sociopathic.
