O'Brien was first married to actress Nancy Kelly from 1941 until 1942. He married his second wife, actress Olga San Juan in 1948. San Juan was the mother of his three children, television producer Bridget O'Brien and actors Maria O'Brien and Brendan O'Brien. The marriage ended in divorce in 1976.
