Sie war zwischen 1989 und 1999 inaktiv, außer einer kurzen Reunion 1995. Ihr Bandleader ist der US-Rockstar Bruce Springsteen. Der Name der Band ergab sich dadurch, dass einer der damaligen Musiker ( David Sancious; Keyboard) in der „E Street“ in Belmar, New Jersey aufgewachsen war und die Band dort gelegentlich in der Garage der Mutter übte.
