8 de mar. de 2021 · The celebrated Edwardian-era British drama Downton Abbey had a wonderful mixture of both extremely realistic and likely storylines and a few rather absurd or unrealistic ones.

How cool everyone was with Thomas being gay, the only reaction that was even remotely realistic was Carson’s and even that was mild as he blamed nature for Thomas being gay (“You have been twisted by nature into something foul”) instead of acting like Thomas had a choice in the matter and just treating him like a disgusting sexual deviant.

However, plenty of strange stuff happened: his ex-wife purposefully sent him to jail, he was incorrectly accused of murder twice, the list goes on. It seemed unrealistic that all of these momentous, and incredibly dramatic, events would happen to a person as demur and boring as John.

I’m gonna start off by stating I, as a queer person, am fairly glad as to how the show handled Thomas but I’m slightly conflicted. Not one of the main characters hated on him for being gay.
