Through an analysis of the revisions of Moroccan family law pertaining to marriage and divorce, the authors challenge the common portrayal of Muslim women as merely passive victims of their religion and culture.
Regarding divorce matters, the 2004 code extended the rights of women to initiate divorce proceedings, including granting both men and women the ability to seek divorce based on irreconcilable differences.
SUMMARY. This report concerns legal and cultural aspects of marriage in Morocco. While the Family Law (2004) regulates the legal aspects of marriage in Morocco, it has been customary that the marriage celebration has been carried out according to different ethnic and geographic traditions.
