Cuando su hermano Philip Dimitri Galas (1954-1986), ya entonces un famoso libretista y productor teatral, se contagia de SIDA, Diamanda se siente muy afectada, ya que ambos estaban muy unidos. Un brillante guionista teatral y actor, cuyo trabajo venía financiado a través de Galas Exotic Cards, negocio que emprendiera en San Francisco en 1978, inspiraría a Diamanda en su adolescencia.
