Denny Dias, who had placed it, was immediately impressed by the pair's abilities, and particularly by the fact that they already had a whole stack of original material. Demian, Dias's band, was just trying to broaden its set beyond the Top 40 covers and R&B numbers that were the staples of the day, and this new source of songs, he could tell, was of high quality.

The latter even featured a memorable guitar duel between Elliott and Denny Dias on the track Green Earrings (see box, below). Despite his preference for remaining a session man and solo artist, Elliott says he has always maintained “a really cordial, respectful relationship” with Steely Dan, culminating in a surprise reunion with the band when they gigged in London in 2009.
2 de feb. de 2023 · Along with guitarist Denny Dias, they were founding members of Demian, the short-lived Long Island jazz-rock group that prefigured Steely Dan. When Demian’s bass player left to return to college in 1969, Dias took out a classified ad in the Village Voice in search of a bassist and electric keyboard player with “jazz chops, and R&B feel.”
