If I recall correctly the writers didn't choose to include him at all except one scene where he called on the phone to talk to Brendon until the season where he became a recurring character (and then disapeared, probably because they failed to have further ideas).

Then comes the deadbeat father acting like the hero and taking custody and treating her like a deadbeat and a monster. She did loose custody and he took her for child support ( even though he used that money to get more tattoos and drink.) she tried to see her son but he started using the kid as a control tactic and pawn and it broke her even more mentally.
