In the late 1960s, Seon married William David Chappelle III and moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio. In 1968 she began to work as the coordinator of student affairs at Wilberforce University, which was a fraught position due to the centrality of university students to the protests of 1968.

After graduating salutatorian from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, she enrolled at Allegheny College, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in 1959.
A native of the D.C. area, Seon returned there for more than thirty years to work and to raise her three children—among them comedian Dave Chappelle. Seon seems unfazed by the national media attention that her son’s fame has brought, including an appearance she made with him on 60 Minutes II.
