Daniel Chapman Stillson was born in Durham, New Hampshire, on March 25, 1830, and was the son of William and Nancy (Chapman) Stillson. His grandfather, William, was a captain in the army during the Revolution. As a young man, Stillson was employed in the cotton factories of New Market and Exeter, New Hampshire.
