I use crossbow for bosses (umbral master crossbow if the loot depends of the damage, or Crossbow of destruction if not); and bow for hunting (falcon bow or bow of cataclysm). Bow is better for hunting because the hits are constant, and now it allows you to use diamond arrows.
Crossbows - Higher max, lower average. I've looked over the top bow/xbow situation for waaay longer than I care to admit and my conclusion is this, based on "value for money", from most to least worth it: Mycological Bow -> Thorn Spitter -> Umbral Bow -> Umbral Master Crossbow -> Umbral Master Bow -> Warsinger Bow -> all other items.
It is a possible reward of the Soul War Quest, which guarantees one random item from the Soul Set the first time said quest is completed. This item is not dropped by any creatures or bosses but it can be obtained from a Bag You Desire, which can be looted from any enemy or boss in the 5 areas of the Soul War Quest if some conditions are met.
For single target a decent xbow but 99.9% of your time above 150 you will use diamond arrows which can't miss. So hit % is useless. Bow for hunting, and Crossbows for single target, which is not meta for hunting, so crossbows only for Bosses.
