Drebbel, Cornelis (1572–1633), inventor and mechanical engineer, was born in Alkmaar in the Netherlands, the son of Jacob Janszoon Drebbel (d. 1591).His father, whose family name was originally Dremmel, was a well-to-do burgher of Alkmaar, a town in the province of North Holland, and in all probability a landowner or farmer.Nothing is known of Drebbel's mother.

Drebbel clearly attracted attention by appearing to work wonders. His case then is instructive as to what patronage was about. Jaeger's argument that he never rose above the level of court entertainers must enter into consideration here. Buckingham appears to have been the source of Drebbel's employment by the British navy in the late 20's.

It was the idea of Cornelius Van Drebbel, a Dutch doctor living in England, in 1620. Van Drebbel's submarine was powered by rowers pulling on oars that protruded through flexible leather seals in the hull.
19 de sept. de 2017 · Biography. Drebbel began his career as an inventor and engraver, marrying the sister of artist Hendrick Goltzius. He and Goltzius also practiced alchemy, and Drebbel composed a natural philosophical work, On the Nature of the Elements. The first surviving edition is a German translation (Drebbel 1608 ). In 1604, Drebbel moved to Ipswich, England.
