Construction of the Colosseum was begun sometime between 70 and 72 ce during the reign of Vespasian. It is located just east of the Palatine Hill, on the grounds of what was Nero ’s Golden House.
The Colosseum (/ ˌ k ɒ l ə ˈ s iː ə m / KOL-ə-SEE-əm; Italian: Colosseo [kolosˈsɛːo]) is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, just east of the Roman Forum. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world, despite its age.
The Flavian Amphitheatre, more commonly known as the Colosseum, stands in the archaeological heart of Rome and welcomes large numbers of visitors daily, attracted by the fascination of its history and its complex architecture. The building became known as the Colosseum because of a colossal statue that stood nearby.
The Colosseum's Belvedere top tier, comprising the third, fourth, and fifth levels, was designed to accommodate the lower classes and women, offering them a chance to witness the enthralling events held in the amphitheater, albeit from a distance.
