Chernivtsi is located in the southwest of Ukraine, in the eastern Carpathians, on the border between the Carpathians and the East European Plain, 40 km (25 miles) from the border with Romania. The city lies 248 meters (817') above sea level and is surrounded by forests and fields.
Chernivtsí (en ucraniano: Чернівці; [t͡ʃerɲiu̯ˈt͡sʲi] ⓘ) o Chernovtsy (en ruso: Черновцы) es una ciudad ucraniana y centro administrativo del óblast de Chernivtsí. Situada en el oeste del país, es el centro del raión de Chernivtsí y del municipio ( hromada) homónimo.
Chernivtsi, city, southwestern Ukraine, situated on the upper Prut River in the Carpathian foothills. The first documentary reference to Chernivtsi dates from about 1408, when it was a town in Moldavia and the chief centre of the area known as Bukovina.
Chernivtsi is one of the most multinational cities in Ukraine and one of the cultural capitals, where UNESCO World Heritage Site and 600-year-old buildings have been preserved. Chernivtsi Oblast covers an area of 8,097 km 2 (3,126 sq mi). It is the smallest oblast in Ukraine, representing 1.3% of Ukrainian territory, and is only larger than the city of Kyiv itself. In the oblast there are 75 rivers longer than 10 kilometers.
