"The studio really didn't want us to direct it," Tatum told Variety. "They wanted anybody but us, essentially, because we had never directed anything."

Prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the latter studio spent years trying to get Channing Tatum to appear as the New Orleans native mutant Remy LeBeau.Tatum was originally confirmed to play Gambit in an unspecified X-Men movie in 2014.
