Writing and recording. The song was originally titled "Anzio, 1944". Its working title was "When the Tigers Break Through" and was written at the same time as The Wall, hence its copyright date of 1979, and was originally intended to be part of that album, but was rejected by the other members of the band on the grounds that it was too personal.

The startling screams and the narrator asking Eugene to be careful definitely set up a dangerous – if not horrific – scene for the listener to think about.
