Beefheart always seems to use everything (voice, rhythm, band and his clarinet) to make it ugly. He is arguing all the time with his own music.
The glorious Captain Beefheart-ian blues Clever White youths (one of the few songs) is derailed by toy piano, comedian horns and kitchen percussion. The festive street fanfare for marching band First Time Every Time is reminiscent of Lol Coxhill 's Welfare State , and the hilarious New is more of the same with just stronger doses of playfulness and craziness.
Rispetto ad altri sperimentatori del passato (Captain Beefheart, per fare il nome piu` ovvio), i Polvo non sono ancorati a un genere particolare. La loro musica conserva tracce molto labili di rock, blues, country, etc. E` anche in questo senso una pura astrazione.
