Booker T. & the M.G.'s were an American instrumental R&B/funk band that was influential in shaping the sound of Southern soul and Memphis soul. The original members of the group were Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson Jr. (drums).

Booker T. and the MG’s, American band that was among the finest instrumental ensembles in soul music in the 1960s. They became the core of a shifting alignment of musicians that acted as the house band for Stax Records. Their best-known songs included ‘Green Onions,’ ‘Boot-Leg,’ and ‘Time Is Tight.’.
By Steve Greenberg. Booker T. & the MG’s grew out of a pair of boyhood friendships in Memphis. Guitarist Steve Cropper (born October 21,1942) and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn (born November 24, 1941) attended Messick High School and played together in an all-white R&B band called the Royal Spades.
