In many ways, it captures the spirit of Bowie himself – an enigma, a performer, and a visionary. From Stardust to Ashes, his music remains as relevant today as it was when he first stepped onto the stage.
Obviously, "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" is part of the Anglican Christian funeral service, and the pun with "funk" means we're attending the funeral of Bowie as a musician, not a person. It's meant to mean that we're waving goodbye to the "action man" of the start of the song.
Ten years later Major Tom re-surfaces in Ashes to Ashes. He is back ! and wants to return to earth. However, many things have changed, including Bowie's treatment of this character. So this song represents a virtual conversation between the 1969 and 1980 Bowie, through the character of Major Tom.
Originating from the 1952 musical film Hans Christian Andersen, Bowie stated in 2003 that the song's chords were some of the first he learned on guitar, calling them "remarkable" and "melancholic": " 'Ashes to Ashes' is influenced by that. It's childlike and melancholic in that children's story way." [5]

The chorus, “Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, We know Major Tom’s a junkie,” reflects the tragic downfall of Major Tom, once an astronaut conquering the unknown, now succumbing to addiction. Bowie’s use of the phrase “ashes to ashes” portrays the cyclic nature of addiction, where one’s life eventually returns to dust.
