Leben. Annie Ernaux verbrachte ihre Kindheit und Jugend in Yvetot in der Normandie.Sie wuchs als Einzelkind in bescheidenen und behüteten Verhältnissen auf und wurde katholisch erzogen. Ihre Eltern waren zunächst Arbeiter und betrieben später ein kleines Ladengeschäft mit einem Café. Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums studierte sie in Rouen und Bordeaux und promovierte im Jahre 1971.
