Unfortunately, first Duane Allman in 1971 and then Berry Oakley in 1972 died as a result of motorcycle accidents. Gregg continued to lead the band along with his own band until 2017 when he died at the age of 69.

When the Allman Brothers recorded the version that appeared on Eat a Peach, it was done as a tribute to Duane, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 1971. The lyrics of “Melissa” evoke a sense of longing and wandering.
