The Addiction is the embodiment of David's own addiction caused by the pills. His nightmarish and corpse-like form is possibly a metaphor for death, either from an overdose or a life of drug use, where his existence represents the need for David to take the pills. The Addiction appears as an Easter Egg in Cry of Fear.
Story. After receiving bottle after bottle of an unknown drug from an anonymous source, David decided to seek help at the local hospital. After wandering into the bathroom, David finds yet another bottle of the drug before him. Unable to control himself, he takes the pills. Soon after, he passes out and delves into a nightmare.

Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut focuses on the troubled and drug-addicted David Leatherhoff who heads to Markland Hospital for rehab to fight his addiction against a mysterious drug. In the bathroom, he finds a bottle of pain-killers and takes them, sending him into a drug-induced nightmare.
David Leatherhoff is the main character of Afraid of Monsters and the Director's Cut. After receiving bottle after bottle of an unknown drug from an anonymous source to help with his nightmares, he finally decided to seek professional help at the local hospital.
