19 de oct. de 2023 · Learn about the biological and behavioral mechanisms of adaptation, the process of organisms adjusting to their environment to improve their chances of survival. Explore examples of adaptation in different contexts, such as high-altitude living, emperor penguins, and giraffes. Discover the role of natural selection and evolution in adaptation.
v. t. e. In biology, adaptation has three related meanings. Firstly, it is the dynamic evolutionary process of natural selection that fits organisms to their environment, enhancing their evolutionary fitness. Secondly, it is a state reached by the population during that process.
Adaptations can take many forms: a behavior that allows better evasion of predators, a protein that functions better at body temperature, or an anatomical feature that allows the organism to access a valuable new resource — all of these might be adaptations.
19 de oct. de 2023 · Learn about the different types of adaptations that help organisms survive and reproduce in their environment, such as structural, behavioral, habitat, speciation, coadaptation and mimicry. See examples of adaptations in plants, animals, birds and other organisms.
This concept is central to ecology: the study of adaptation is the study of the evolutionary relationship between organisms and their environment. Adaptation is related to biological fitness, which governs the rate of evolution as measured by change in gene frequencies.
