Unknown since its theft in 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, US. A Lady and Gentleman in Black is an oil-on-canvas painting, reputedly a work of the Dutch artist Rembrandt in 1633. Measuring 131.6 by 109 centimetres (51.8 in × 42.9 in), it depicts a well-dressed husband and wife. [1]

A Lady and Gentleman in Black. Creation Date. 1633. Description. Stolen in 1990. Provenance. Inherited by Henry Philip Hope (1774-1839) from Henry W. Hope, his legal guardian, but possibly under the care of his eldest brother, Thomas Hope (1769-1831), in the gallery at his Duchess Street street house, London in 1819/20.

Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669), A Lady and Gentleman in Black, 1633. A Unique Past. Isabella and Bernard's relationship went back nearly a decade. They had first met in Boston, when he was a student at Harvard University, and she was taking classes on Dante. In 1887, he graduated and she helped to finance his travels.
