Yancy Spencer III*. Yancy Spencer III was born in 1950 in Roanoke, Virginia, then moved with his family to Pensacola, Florida, where he began surfing at 14. He got his first surfboard from the local Hutson hardware store. “It was May 1, 1965,” Spencer recalled in a 2009 interview.
