Tap out the sounds you hear in the word. You can have students use their fingers to tap and count the sounds. Ask them how many sounds they hear in the word. 3.
Flash words are words we can read “in a flash” and are essentially decodable high-frequency words. Words like him, it, and can fit into this category. When our phonics instruction is systematic and explicit, our students will learn these letter sounds, commit them to memory, and be able to retrieve them for reading.
Step 4: Practice! Practice! Have students write their focus word on the included three lines and mark the “heart part.”. There’s also a section to use their heart word in a sentence. Remind your students to keep marking the heart part to help focus their attention on the piece they’ll need to memorize.

Teach 10–15 “sight words” before phonics instruction begins. Many kindergarten students are expected to learn 20 to 50, or even more, high-frequency words during the year. The words are introduced and practiced in class and students are asked to study them at home.
