9 de feb. de 2024 · He and The Clash became fast friends and toured together, elevating Ely’s music to new credibility with its tinges of early rock’n’roll, rockabilly and Tex-Mex that sat well in the punk era.
Ely returned to rambling around the country, but he was back in Lubbock by 1974, when he began putting together a permanent backup band to play there and around Texas. The Joe Ely Band featured Ely on acoustic guitar and vocals, Jesse Taylor on electric guitar, Lloyd Maines on steel guitar, Gregg Wright on bass, and Steve Keeton on drums.
Throughout his career, Ely has issued a steady stream of albums, most on the MCA label, and a live album roughly every ten years. On May 1, 1982, Joe Ely put on the Third Annual Tornado Jam in Lubbock, Texas to a crowd of 25,000. The Jam included Leon Russell, Joan Jett and The Crickets.
Joe would release 2 records on Hi-Tone - 1987’s Lord of the Highway and 1988’s Dig All Night. Joe’s band films and releases the 60 minute VHS video Live From Texas. The video is a collection of songs from Joe’s September concert at Gruene Hall in Gruene TX. Joe’s band consists of Bobby Keys, David Grissom, Jimmy Pettit, and Davis McLarty.

The Flatlanders, the Lubbock trio he first played and recorded with in 1972, headlined the Back to the Basics Music Festival at Luckenbach in late September.
