Archie Bell & the Drells was an American R&B vocal group from Houston, Texas, and one of the main acts on Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records.
He began singing in the church choir by the time he was ten, and as a teen he formed the Drells (made to rhyme with Bell) with friends Willie Parnell, James Wise and Billy Butler. The group wona number of local talent competitions and received an introduction to popular DJ Skipper Lee Frazier, who helped them put together their first recordings.

Archie Bell & the Drells included Bell’s school buddies, Billy Butler, Willie Parnell, and James Wise. This was the lineup that recorded and released its debut hit single, “Tighten Up.” At first, it was a regional hit before Atlantic Records caught wind of it, secured the band to its label, and had this song become a nationwide hit.
