William Gillette was a famous American actor, playwright and stage director/producer who played Sherlock Holmes on stage for more than 35 years. He also wrote many plays, films and radio adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and other works. He was born in 1853 in a wealthy and cultured family in Hartford, Connecticut, and died in 1937 from pulmonary hemorrhage.
