Green-winged Orchids can be found in species-rich, old meadows, often popping up with lots of Cowslips in mid-May. They don’t have spotted leaves and have green streaks on the pink/purple wing like petals. The orchid family consists of over 25,000 species and around 110,000 registered hybrids. Those are the registered numbers. Some orchids are not discovered nor registered.
Orchids outnumber bird species 2:1 and mammal species 4:1. Orchids are the source of exciting biology in their own right, with much still unknown. There is a need for more concerted efforts to conserve wild orchids via the establishment of plant, seed, and fungal banks representing their immense genetic diversity.
