So using "great" isn't common, so usually we say "great" if things are really, really good. If you sounded very happy when you said it, then you would have been believed. I'm assuming you said "I am doing great" with a normal tone, so the words you used seemed too emphasized for your relaxed tone. This mismatch caused the confusion.
